May 1st is International Workers' Day (or "May day") to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. On May 1st 1886, there was a general strike for the eight-hour workday. 4 Days later, police acted to disperse the public who assembled in support of the strike, which resulted in in police firing on the workers. Afterwards hundreds of labour leaders and sympathizers were later rounded-up and four were executed by hanging.
